A guide to photographing with natural light

The number one key to shooting in natural light is location, location, location. Whether you are shooting at a remote location or not, taking the time to check out the scenery and focus on what kind of image you are going for. Which ever we choose to use as our natural lighting source we can help ourselves by understanding this method for anytime of the day shooting. Some tools that cant help guide you in your natural light shooting are; reflectors, diffusion panels and black panels (which helps to act as flags or allows contrast into a shot in place of V flats).

Some other tips to consider is placement of the sun. Using back lighting works well as the sun comes down. For instance if the sun is behind your subject it will help in providing the light to wrap around and reflect creating a beautiful rim reflection of lighting. The usage of shade when direct light is hitting will allow for you to keep subject from being overexposed. Background exposure is important. The more attention you pay to it the more chances you have of separating distraction from within and allowing out door high and low lighting into your images.
